Nice to see that Laguna's football tradition is still alive. I enjoyed your web pages and the photos.
I used to live in Laguna Estate in the late 60s early 70s and we founded the Laguna Boys F.C. in around 1968/69. We never played in any leagues but played a series of friendlies for about two and a half years and never lost a match.
We played against the boys in the RAF houses near Eastern Beach in the Devil's Tower Pitch. They used to wear the Celtic strip and we started with white t-shirts and a diagonal red band stuck at the front, a bit like Rayo Vallecano. Things were tight those
days and we couldn't afford proper strips. A year later, we bought Blue t-shirts and managed to get numbers ironed on our backs. We played against the team from Moorish Castle and another from Europa, at the Europa pitch and we managed to beat everyone. He even beat some of the Third division sides in friendlies at the Naval Ground on a number of occasions.
I think we once had a photo taken in the patio at Landport House but it would be a miracle if anyone had a copy 30 years later.
Players from those days apart from myself were, Alan Walsh, Graham Sacristan, Antonio (el peluca)Macias, Joselito Alecio, Manolito Alsina, Johnny Bruzon, Dennis Gonzalez and others that I can't remember at the moment. Our 'manager' was big Johnny 'Harry'
Gomez.
The team then became St.Marks F.C. from the St. Marks club which used to be where the Glass Factory is now. We played in the Second Division for one year and did not disgrace ourselves. Then other players like Alfred Cornelio and Tony Williamson went to play for
Gibraltar United and I went on to play for St Joseph's and St. Jago's. Others like Graham Sacristan and Alan Walsh took up hockey and eventually the whole team broke up.
We started playing in El Llano where the adventure playground is now. We used to mark out the pitch with 'borrowed' chalk (cal blanca) from the old spaniard at the Victoria Stadium and even made real goalposts ourselves. We played matches in 1967/68 on 'our' pitch against 'los ninos de los glacis', and beat them all the time too.
I hope you find this short story interesting. It's strange but it is also all true.
Thanks for your time don't hesitate to fax me if you need to.
Regards
Dennis Beltran.
